In filing the affidavit of support, Form I- 864 a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Green Card holder) accepts responsibility for financially supporting the foreign relative. This responsibility lasts until the foreign relative becomes a U.S. citizen or is credited with forty (40) hours of work under the Social Security Administration. Sponsors accept this responsibility by filing Form I-864, Affidavit of Support.  A majority of all immigrants who are applying to obtain a Green Card through a family member must submit an Affidavit of Support.

If the sponsor does not have adequate income for sponsorship of foreign relative.  Sponsor's household members may include their income as financial support and in doing so fill out form I-864A.

The sponsor must meet the minimum Federal poverty guidelines.  This is updated each year by the Census bureau.  There is no specific requirment because the Federal poverty guidelines set is based on the number of members in your family.  So it changes annually and is based on how many members in the sponsors family household.

It is favored that the co-sponsor is family and closely related.  Your chances can improve with evidence of past work history, and future possibility of similar work.  They need to base their decision on a reasonable possibility that you will not be at risk of becoming a public burden.
