If you wish to extend your stay as a visitor past the date indicated on your I-94 card, you will need to file an application with USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services).  This application is filed on Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status.  You should file this application before your current period of authorized stay expires.

When you file for the extension, it is helpful to submit evidence of compelling ties to your home country. It is also helpful to submit a notarized affidavit stating why you want to extend your visa, a copy of your bank statement or letter from a sponsor stating they will assume financial responsiblity for you and finally proof of a return ticket home.

How do I extend my visitor visa?

Hi there,
First and foremost, make sure that you extend your visa 45 days before its expiration. And, for those who are too late in extending their visa they should prove that:
  • The reason to the delay is due to an unavoidable circumstances
  • The extension of the stay is reasonable
  • There is no violation that have been done (like working which is illegal particularly for temporary visitor visa holders)
