My sister is in the US on a B1/B2 visa. She had originally come to give her USMLE final step exam. She has already cleared all her USMLE exams and is now certified for observership (work without pay, is mainly for experience) in US hospitals. She still has about three months left of her allotted 6 months. She has been able to secure a voluntary research position at a university in US, but the university demands that both the visa and immigration stamp have B1 in them. The visa is ok but her immigration stamp states B2. So, she is not able to join.
Again it is just for doing research and not for registering for classes.
One school of thought is that she could return and re-enter US with a letter from the university asking for a B1 immigration stamp.
But I was wondering if there is any way that she could get that changed without having to leave US.
Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.
Thanks.
P.S. She has already done a six month stint in the US when she came to give the third USMLE exam (there are 4). And she did not overstay at that time. Nor does she plan to do now..

It is quite common for people to apply for different visas from the B2 or B1, but I'm not sure about just get a new stamp. Can you contact the USCIS and ask them what you should do?
